Signe Jais primarily works with collage, using different types of paper, cardboard and sewing thread to build her works.
In recent years, Signe Jais has been inspired by descriptive geometry as a method of translating depth and spatiality into drawing. The works are not necessarily actual, correct geometry, but focus on the space and movement that a flat drawing can reveal. In this way, geometry becomes a starting point for unfolding the sensations that are hidden in two-dimensional drawings in paper and sewing thread. In meticulous repetitions, Signe Jais produces collages where the straight, flat lines draw rotating spaces, they bridge voids and draw the sound of an echo. We become aware of the sensations that are hidden in the perfect system.
Already in her choice of materials, Jais leads us away from the two-dimensional and the bare facts. She uses both older and new paper, which awakens our senses and memory, and to this tactile paper, Signe Jais adds sewing thread in different colors. In several works, the character of the objects is emphasized by the cardboard bases being mounted slightly raised from the background, and even though the threads function as simple lines, the works become three-dimensional objects.
